Event Details
Hey Social Media fans,
The June SMC Richmond event will be held Tuesday, June 9 from 5:30pm - 9:00pm. We're very excited to bring you our first panel discussion - "New Media and the News". The panel will discuss the changing landscape of news gathering and reporting in the age of social media, and will include:
- Ryan Nobles / Rachel DePoma - NBC12
- John Sarvay - Buttermilk and Molasses blog
- Ian Graham - RVA Magazine
- Jason Roop - Style Weekly
- Aaron Kremer - RichmondBizSense.com
Our moderator will be Andrea Genevieve Michnik. Andrea is a graduate of St. Bonaventure University
holding a Honors degree in Journalism/Mass Communication and MA in Integrated Marketing Communications.
She now works as the Director of Marketing & Enrollment with George
Washington University’s Semester in Washington Journalism Program where
she teaches New Media and Public Relations.
She is heavily involved in the Washington DC new media scene as the premiere blogger for the Smithsonian Channel. Recently, Andrea joined the SocialCity Marketing team based out of NYC as a social media consultant for Washington, DC area non-profits and small business.
Even more exciting is that the event will be hosted at the Science Museum of Virginia. This will provide us with significantly more space than we had last time, so while we want you to be able to "rub elbows", it won't be a required activity.
As with last month, the event will be catered. We're planning an open wine and beer bar and food catered by Mosaic (menu details to follow). Our sponsors, Style Weekly, Siddall Inc, Advertising and the Science Museum, are helping with some of the costs, but we will will need to charge $15 for admission. Unlike at Morton's, there is no way to collect this at the door, so this time around, you will need to purchase your tickets in advance by using this registration page. Please Note that the tickets are non-refundable.
The Agenda for the event will be as follows:
- 5:30-6:15 Event sign-in / hors d'oeuvres & open bar
- 6:30-7:30 panel discussion (bar closed)
- 7:30-9:00 informal discussion with panel, networking w/ hors d'oeuvres & open bar
You know this already sold out once, so if you plan on attending, make sure you register early.
Also, before you go, you should become a fan of The Science Museum of VA on Facebook. You can do it by clicking here.

Social Media Club Richmond (SMCRVA)
Social Media Club is an international organization, founded in 2006, with the goal of hosting conversations that explore key issues facing our society as technologies transform the way we connect, communicate, collaborate and relate to each other. Today, there are 300+ chapters on six continents, the largest such collection of social media professionals and enthusiasts in the world.
Social Media Club Richmond (SMCRVA) was founded in May of 2009 to bring the ideals of the larger organization to central Virginia in the form of relevant, practical social media programs on a monthly basis. Our events have ranged from panel discussions identifying the ways changing technologies have affected myriad industries to presentations from noted authors and inspirational guest speakers, always with the goal of mixing interesting business ideas and practices with a networking and social component.
SMCRVA is a non-profit organization; our regular events are open to the public and typically carry a small fee to cover catering and other venue costs. While opportunities to become an official member of the national organization exist, we consider every attendee of our SMCRVA events to be a local member. If you would like to volunteer at an upcoming event or like to know how you can get more involved in the local organization, send us an email at SMCRichmond@gmail.com
Keep up with the latest on SMCRVA on Facebook or Twitter:

Use the Twitter hashtag #SMCRVA to follow the conversation in real-time, but be warned, it gets a little intense on event days.
